SchoolProtect - Settings User Groups
User groups allow specific groups of USO users to have their own filtering policies. User groups are configured on Settings >> User Groups
Please note: per-user filtering is not supported in schools that use network address translation or use a proxy server on site.
How User Groups Enable Per-User Filtering
You can decide to implement per-user filtering in three different ways.
- It can be used as the only type of filtering, so that all users will have to log in to get onto the internet.
- It can be used in conjunction with IP-based filtering.
- It can be used in conjunction with IP-based & AD linked filtering.
Once set up, to be filtered by a policy linked to a USO user group, a user must log in on a block page with their USO credentials.
If a Policy Group linked to USO User Group has been set up, users will see a login button on the block page.
Viewing User Groups
All existing user groups will be displayed on the user groups page. You can view the members of any existing user group by clicking Edit Members.
If a User Group is already covered by a filtering policy, the name of that policy will be shown in the Associated Policy Group column. A single filtering policy can apply to a number of user groups
To change the name, description or which policy group a User Group is associated with, please select Edit Properties.
Deleting A User Group
To delete a user group, click the X symbol on the row of the group you wish to delete.
You will need to confirm the action before a user group will be deleted.
Click the Delete button to confirm or Close to return to the previous page.
Creating A User Group
SchoolProtect functionality: Creating a user group in SchoolProtect
To create a new user group, click Create New.
You will need to name the user group. A description is optional.
You can apply a policy to a user group as soon as it is created or you can do this at a later stage.
If you're ready to apply a policy, select the relevant policy from the drop-down menu, otherwise this can be done later.
This pop-up will only show the policies that are available to use. Therefore policies already linked to IP addresses or AD users will not be visible here to associate to.
Please note: any new user group you create is effectively just an empty container and will have no members until you define them.
Once the information has been entered, click Create to create the group.
The new group will be shown on the main User Groups page.
To add members to a group click the Edit Members link to the right of the relevant user group.
User groups can contain only staff, only pupils or a combination of both types of users.
Adding Individual Users
Individual users can be added to a group in one of two ways;
- By searching for a user, under the heading 'Search by Details'
- Adding a user by USO username, under the heading 'Add by Username'
To search for a user, please complete the form, as pictured below. The authority/group & establishment you can select will depend on which establishments your are an administrator for.
Once you have carried out a search and the results have been returned, please press Select next to any users you wish to add to the User Group.
Once added they will be visible to the right hand side of the page.
It is also possible to add users based on their username, if known. Please enter their full USO username & click Add.
Multiple usernames can be added to this field separated by a ;
For example: jthomas80.998;jsmith19.998 or jthomas80.998; jsmith19.998 would add both these accounts with one click of the Add button.
Adding Users In Bulk
It is possible to add users in bulk based on accounts' Year, Class, Role or Permission.
Simple select the required option from one of the drop-down boxes & click the arrow to the right to add.
A mixture of these options can be added to one User Group.
Once added the users will be visible to the right of the screen.
Please note: it is not possible to remove individual users added as a bulk action, you will need to remove the profile they were added with.
In the example above, only one of the account has the delete next to it, as the other two were added based on a role.
