Vimeo Filtering
Vimeo is in the social media category, which is the same as YouTube. There are a few options, which are worth carefully considering as you start the new year.
Before considering the options, please note that Vimeo doesn't have a safe search option which we can enforce, so we strongly recommend not leaving it open to students and warning staff to be very careful with its use.
A preferred option is to use the new embedded content function.
Please be aware that unlike YouTube and Google, you cannot enforce safe search with X/Twitter or Vimeo; what is more, X now also officially allows adult content!
We therefore advise extreme caution before allowing these sites in their entirety, especially for students as they may be exposed to highly inappropriate content.
But don’t worry - remember that:
- You can not only have different policies for staff and students, but by linking SchoolProtect to your Windows (AD / Azure) or Chromebook directories, you can have different rules according to key stage or even year group (great for showing a risk-based approach to balance risk, safety and overblocking)!
- Beyond simply blocking these sites for at least students, you can be more flexible and not overblock or break the sites you need.
To do this, use our embedded content feature. This allows you, for example, to allow the X feed for your school which is embedded on your school website so it displays properly, or to allow Vimeo videos in a learning resource sites you use which uses Vimeo for its embedded videos. This can work for various video and social media sites.
